Carnegie Mellon University - Cohon University Center Addition

site design | pittsburgh, pa

Andropogon worked with CannonDesign on the expansion of the existing fitness center to help the University maximize the impact of this capital project and meet its master plan goals. The addition creates a front door for the University on Forbes Avenue, establishing the University’s presence within the city. Andropogon’s site design integrated natural hydrological processes into an engaging new entry plaza and a lush, urban streetscape. The stepped gabion walls of the rain gardens are filled with reclaimed limestone cobblestones salvaged from Pittsburgh’s streets. The hard-working rain garden plants were chosen for their resiliency and ability to withstand the abuses of drought, inundation, and salt.
