University of Pennsylvania, Sansom Streetscape

master plan & site design | philadelphia, pa

This project, a fast-tracked mixed-use retail development, was part of the University’s effort to spur economic growth and enhance campus security by providing additional amenities to the adjacent community. The 305,000 square foot complex includes a hotel, campus bookstore -- one of the largest in the nation -- and several restaurants, retail stores and an outdoor cafe. The volume of foot traffic and activity at this busy urban site demanded a tree planting system that would minimize compaction to tree roots and still support healthy root systems. Constructed continuous tree trenches were designed that function effectively as “life support systems” for the urban trees. The trenches are outfitted with a passive aeration and watering system and filled with a special soil mix that supports the pavement.
